Demographic barometer

  • EU-27 Households, 2025
    • According to the 2021 population censuses, 98.5% of the EU-27 population live in private households; the average size of a private household is 2.2 persons.
    • The number of private households in the EU-27 increased by 11% between 2009 and 2025, while the average household size declined from 2.4 to 2.2 persons.
    • The number of single-adult households increased by 37% between 2009 and 2025, while the number of two-adult households increased by 4%.
    • The share of households with children declined from 28% in 2009 to 23% in 2025.
    • Among the EU-27 population aged 18 and over, the share of people living alone increased to 21%, while the share of those living as a couple without children increased to 27%.
    • Among women aged 65 and over, the share living alone is 40%; among men of the same age, it is 22%.
