Alcohol and world population health, 2018 WHO estimates

  • In 2016, 5.3% of all deaths and 5.1% of the disease burden were related to alcohol consumption.

  • Alcohol-related losses are highest in the European Region of the WHO.

  • Men account for 77% of deaths and 80% of the burden of alcohol-related diseases.

  • The mortality and burden of alcohol-related diseases is higher in lower-income countries
