  • Asylum seekers in the European Union, 2023-2024
    • The number of asylum applications filed in EU-27 countries in 2023 exceeded one million, with around 1.2 million people awaiting a decision on their applications at the end of September 2024
    • Among first-time asylum seekers in the EU-27, citizens of Syria and Afghanistan continue to predominate
    • 42% of first-time asylum seekers in the EU-27 in 2023 were men aged 18-34
    • In the EU-27 in 2023, almost 678,000 first-instance and 192,000 final decisions were made on asylum applications, of which 53% and 27%, respectively, were positive
    • As of the end of October 2024, more than 4.1 million citizens of Ukraine enjoyed temporary protection status in EU-27
