The Quebec Inter-University Centre for Social Statistics (QICSS, Montréal) and the Institut national d’études démographiques (INED, Paris) are jointly organizing an international conference on "Social Statistics and Ethnic Diversity: Should we count, how should we count and why?" in Montreal, December 6-8, 2007.

The main goal of the conference is to establish links between the production, analysis, uses and interpretation of social statistics related to ethnic diversity. The Conference aims to encourage international exchanges in order to document the diversity of situations, namely: the experience of countries of immigration (Canada, the United States, Australia, etc.), the European experience, and the experience of countries of the South (Africa, Latin America, Asia, etc.).

The Conference also aims to generate debate between the many different actors involved: organizations that produce statistics, researchers, and users (including civil society, in particular NGOs involved in anti-discrimination activities). Submissions of Proposals: This conference aspires to bring together decision makers, policy analysts, community workers, and scholars (including students).

Persons interested in submitting a paper proposal should send a one-page abstract (around 500 words) by May 1st, 2007 simultaneously to the three following addresses: a.gagnon@umontreal.ca; victor@acpd.ca; simon@ined.fr . Presentations can be made in French or English. Authors will be notified of acceptance by June 1st, 2007.

Le Centre Inter-Universitaire Québecois de Statistiques Sociales et l'Institut national d'études démographiques (INED) organisent conjointement une conférence internationale sur "Statistiques sociales et diversité ethnique : doit-on compter, comment et à quelles fins ?" à Montréal du 6 au 8 décembre 2007.

L’objectif principal de la conférence est d’établir le lien entre la production, l’analyse, l’utilisation et l’interprétation des statistiques sociales reliées à la diversité ethnique. La Conférence veut favoriser un échange international afin de montrer la diversité des situations : l’expérience des pays dits d’immigration (Canada, États-Unis, Australie, etc.), l’expérience européenne et l’expérience du Sud (Afrique, Amérique Latine, Asie…).

La Conférence veut également provoquer un débat entre plusieurs acteurs : les organismes producteurs de statistiques, les chercheurs et les utilisateurs (incluant la société civile, en particulier les organismes non-gouvernementaux de lutte contre la discrimination). Soumission de propositions : Cette conférence s’adresse aux décideurs, analystes politiques, intervenants communautaires, chercheurs universitaires (y compris les étudiants).

Les personnes qui désirent soumettre un projet de communication doivent faire parvenir un résumé d’une page (environ 500 mots) d’ici le 1er mai 2007 aux trois adresses suivantes simultanément: a.gagnon@umontreal.ca; victor@acpd.ca; simon@ined.fr. Les présentations peuvent être faites en français ou en anglais. Les avis de participation seront envoyés aux auteurs d’ici le 1er juin 2007.
